Weather was perfect. Trail was great. Got started early so not much of anyone out yet. It was a nice hike, a little bit difficult at times. Seen a lot of people with hats, hiking poles, camelbacks so make sure your prepared. A well kept trail, Peking lot is small. Very cool temp once there, nice place for a snack. Stairs are precarious use the hand rail. Great day trip and the waterfalls are well worth the beginning incline. The waterfall pools are very swimmable! Beautiful scenery!

Nice incline on the way there, a couple pretty hard parts. Totally worth it, downhill most of the way back. So pretty and plenty of shady spots even though it was 90 out. Great trail. A little steep but worth it. My two kids aged 8 and 11 were able to make it. At the top of the falls per of the stairway is closed.

Nice trail , once you reach the waterfalls there are plenty spots to access the water! Little steep going in toward the falls , so carry hiking poles if you have trouble walking down slopes on the way back out!

All in all nicely shaded and beautiful trail! First half there's several steep inclines but plenty of rest spots and shade. It was a beautiful hike but it was pretty much a straight incline to the water fall meaning straight down hill on the way back. I recommend a walking stick and just taking your time. Whiskeytown Falls Trail moderate Length 4. The James K. Carr Trail to Whiskeytown Falls is relatively strenuous. There is over feet of elevation gain and some steep sections of trail on the way to the waterfall. At minimum, wear sturdy shoes and carry plenty of water to drink. While evidence of the Carr Fire can be found along the trail, ample shade remains.

Because of the steep topography, colder climate, and unique vegetation of this drainage, the area was much less affected by the unprecedented fire than other areas of the park. At the base of the waterfall, be sure and head up the cement stairs to see the upper sections of this three-tiered waterfall. The age of discovery continues into the present at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area While studying aerial photographs of the park in , long-time park natural resource manager Russ Weatherbee discovered a waterfall.

Russ then visited the site and may have even pinched himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming the vision of this foot-tall, three-part waterfall. Russ had discovered, or perhaps rediscovered, the tallest waterfall in the park. After the story of the waterfall's discovery got out, it came to light that for over 40 years the falls was known about by a few local residents.

For a variety of reasons, these specific individuals decided not to share the falls' existence with others. Two summers of trail construction work ensued and park staff opened the trail to Whiskeytown Falls for others to see and enjoy. The trail to the falls is named in honor of James K. Carr, one of Redding's native sons and an instrumental figure in the establishment of what is officially known as Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area.

A state and national reclamation official, Carr served as President John F. Kennedy's Undersecretary of the Interior, the number two position in the department behind Interior Secretary Stewart Udall.

West of the lake, the signs to Whiskeytown Falls couldn't be clearer. Take a left onto Crystal Creek Road and drive 3. Parking is limited at the trailhead, leaving some folk to resort to parking by the side of the road. Improvements are being taken however to increase the number of parking spots available.

Strap on your hiking boots and head out onto the recently opened James K. Carr trail, which begins in in sunshine on level ground, crosses a creek and then climbs gently and steadily uphill under cover of foliage. Ignore the larger logging road and continue along the slightly narrower trail towards the falls. You've reached Whiskeytown Falls and the cascading ft torrent of water which cuts a curved route through the valley, meaning that you can't see the whole waterfall from this location.

Enjoy the golden sands of our smallest National Park by land and by sea. Depending on time and tides we have several options in the afternoon as we make our way south to Anchorage. Being home to the Mt Arthur range it features some of our oldest rocks, most extensive cave systems, craziest plants and several of our rarest birds.

The access road to Mount Arthur — the second highest mountain in Kahurangi National Park — climbs to almost 1, metres, leading us to the start of our hike.
